Sarah Michelle Gellar calls out Marvel fans for tearing apart female superhero movies

Sarah Michelle Gellar has a few words for all the Marvel fans out there who keep tearing apart movies that feature a female cast of heroes. I imagine you’ve seen a lot these days, and in a recent interview with The Guardian, you said:

“Gender is where women can really succeed and keep an audience. Every time a Marvel movie tries to cast females, it just gets torn apart… Unfortunately, audiences weren’t so willing to accept. it’s still this ‘male ‘superhero’ mentality, this very backward way of thinking.”

Well, for me, I grew up with badass heroines like Linda HamiltonThere’s Sarah Conner Terminator 2 And Sigourney WeaverThere’s Ripley aliens. There are a lot of amazing female heroines that have been portrayed in movies over the years, and when the characters are well cast and the story is strong, those movies work and are great!

When it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there are plenty of amazing female heroes that fans have enjoyed including Scarlett JohanssonBlack Widow, who fans wanted to see get her own solo movie for years until Marvel finally got it, and it was amazing!

There is also Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlett Witch, Tessa Thompson like valkyrie, Letizia Wright like Shuri, Danai Gurira like Okoye, Lupita Nyong’o like Nakia, Evangelina Lilli like the wasp, Karen Gillan like Nebula, Zoe Saldana like Gamora, Florence Pug like Yelena Belova, and there are many more! The only one I’ve ever really seen fans complain about is Brie Larsonis Captain Marvel because some think she was wrong.

I think for the most part Marvel fans enjoy seeing the heroines in action! As a father of three daughters, I definitely appreciate that! Regardless of whether the hero is male or female, the most important aspect of a film is to tell the story well.
