‘The Last of Us’ failed to unseat ‘The House of the Dragon’ as the biggest premiere on HBO Max. That doesn’t mean it’s having a runaway success. With the arrival of ‘Infected’ (the second installment of the series) viewership was up 22% from the pilot’s premiereaccording to data provided by Nielsen, a global audience measurement company, and by the HBO Max platform itself, which says of the second chapter: “It’s the biggest growth for an HBO original drama series in its history”.

5.7 million viewers gathered that same night to follow in the footsteps of Joel and Ellie, one million more than in the previous episode. The pilot managed to double that figure, reaching 10 million viewers in 48 hours. However, the phenomenon that this fungus is spreading has changed these data: “After a full week of availability, episode 1 now has 18 million viewers, four times more than the day it premiered”supports HBO Max.
“The House of the Dragon” broke records at its premiere and “The Last of Us” was about to. However, other hits on the platform such as “Euphoria” and “The White Lotus” have a much lower entry threshold, but this does not mean that they cease to have considerable success. “Euphoria” gathered 2.4 million spectators at its premiere, “The White Lotus” 1.5 million. Why is there such a huge difference compared to the 10 million that ‘The House of the Dragon’ got and the data from ‘The Last of Us’? Both the Targaryen spin-off and the apocalyptic road are supported by a community that had already been forging years with their respective predecessors: ‘Game of Thrones’ and the video game franchise. This fan phenomenon makes all the difference, however, we must not forget that anyone can watch the series: “The beauty of ‘The Last of Us’ is that it shows another version of the video game. If you haven’t played the game you can enjoy the series independently”in the words of Troy Baker, the voice of Joel in the game for Comic Book Resources.
The video game adds sales
The world continues to be infected by the fever of ‘The last of Us’. The series is not the only beneficiary. Sales of ‘The Last of Us’ video games skyrocketed with the arrival of the adaptation. ‘The Last of Us: Part 1’ increased its sales by 238%, which is a lot, but less than the increase in the remaster of the game for PlayStation 4, which increased its sales by 322%, according to Games Industry Biz.
