James Cameron doesn’t want you to watch movies on your phone, but it’s not because of the picture quality

James Cameron’s new film, ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’ was created to be seen in premium large format cinemas such as IMAX 3D or Dolby Cinema, but that doesn’t mean it cannot be seen in other formats. Indeed, the director said so even watching the movie at home can still be a good experience: “If you watch ‘Water Way’ at home, on a reasonably large flat screen with a decent sound system, and sit close enough, like that, across the room, you’ll have a good experience.”.

The problem for Cameron comes when he decides to watch the film on his cell phone, but not for the size of the screen, but for the attention paid to the film, as he tells NPR (via Variety):“When you start seeing something on mobile, you kind of miss the point. Going to the cinema is not so much for the size of the screen or for the perfection of the audio system, as for the choice not to do several things at the same time”.

The ‘Titanic’ director had insight into the experience as a moviegoer at home and what you’re missing out on in theaters in an interview with Variety at the premiere of the ‘Avatar’ sequel: “I think that’s a crucial part that people are missing. You’re making a deal with an artwork to give it your full attention, and you’re not making it home. People don’t cry as much when they watch the movie at home as they would if they saw it in the theatre. Emotions don’t have the same depth”.

‘Avatar: The Water Sense’ has already surpassed ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ in the global box office, becoming the sixth highest-grossing film of all time with a collection that to date is close to 2 billion dollars. Its director celebrated the film’s standing by confirming that the sequel to ‘Avatar’ is proof of that theaters still matter: “We are returning to cinemas around the world. Even in China they are returning, despite this great wave of infections they are experiencing due to COVID. As a society we are saying: We need this! We have to go back to the cinemas, Stop streaming! I’m tired of sitting on my ass”.
