EXCLUSIVE: Jack O’Connell, Eddie Marsan and Lesley Manville Join Cast of Amy Winehouse Biopic back to black, with Marisa Abela as the Grammy winner, who died in 2011 at the age of 27. Sam Taylor-Johnson is on board to direct the film from StudioCanal, Focus Features and Monumental Pictures.
Focus will distribute the picture in the US while Universal Pictures International will handle international distribution, with the exception of the UK, France, Germany, Australia/New Zealand, Benelux, Scandinavia and Poland, which will be handled by Studiocanal. Filming begins Monday in London.
Deadline was the first to report that Studiocanal and Taylor-Johnson were making progress on the film, as well as Focus’ recent involvement in the project. Production currently takes place in London.
O’Connell plays Winehouse’s love of life, Blake Fielder-Civil. The two had planned to marry in 2007, but after a tumultuous relationship steeped in alcohol and drugs that led to rehab, the two eventually divorced before Winehouse died.
Marsan will play Winehouse’s father and Manville will play her maternal grandmother.
One of the biggest artists in recent history, Winehouse has sold more than 30 million records worldwide and now generates more than 80 million streams per month. Her 2006 album Back to black propelled her to stardom and earned her a record five Grammys (at the time), including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for the hit single “Rehab.” The film will focus on Amy’s brilliance, creativity and honesty that permeated everything she did. A journey that took her from the craziness and color of Camden High Street in the 1990s to global adoration and back again, the photo tumbles through the celebrity mirror to see this journey behind the mirror to see what Amy looked like to feel what she feels.
The photo was written by Greenhalgh, reunite the author with Taylor Johnson after their cooperation Nowhere son in 2009. Featuring many of Winehouse’s hits, Back to black has the full support of Universal Music Group, Sony Music Publishing and the Amy Winehouse Estate.

O’Connell remains very busy in 2022 with the critically acclaimed film SAS villain Series that bowed to EPIX and the adaptation of Netflix and Sony Lady Chatterley’s lover. He then played racing driver Peter Collins in Michael Mann’s. Ferrari. He is represented by UTA, Conway van Gelder Grant and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern.
Next is Marsan in the drama Fair play which will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival later this year and also features Guy Ritchie’s photo Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre bend this year. He is repped by Markham Froggatt and Irwin and UTA.
Manville last starred as Princess Margaret in the Emmy-winning actress’ recent season The crown. Most recently she was also seen in the thriller Let him go. She is represented by ARG Talent.
