The series follows a young chef, played by Jeremy Allen White,” from the world of fine dining returns home to Chicago to run the family sandwich shop after a heartbreaking death in the family. A world away from what he’s used to, Carmy must balance the soul-crushing reality of small-business ownership, her strong-willed and recalcitrant kitchen staff, and her strained family relationships, all while grappling with the impact of his brother’s suicide. As Carmy struggles to transform both the shop and herself, he works alongside a kitchen crew who ultimately turn out to be his chosen family.
Co-showrunner and executive producer Christopher Storer recently teased the show’s second season by telling TV Line:
“It almost feels like Season 1 was kind of ‘Let’s Catch Up,’ and Season 2 is kind of like where the show properly kicks off, once we’ve met everyone and seen their backstory. So it was nice to expand the world and learn more about them.
I’ll enter spoiler territory here as we move forward. Season 1 ended with Chef Carmy finding a secret stash of cash hidden by her late brother and deciding to relaunch the sandwich shop as a fine-dining restaurant. Speaking about what that means for the chef, Storer said:
“Season two, really, is about balancing in a lot of ways, between time and what it means to start over and how you can start in a healthy direction. For someone like Richie, I think finding where he fits is what he’s looking for in season two.
While the finale left audiences with a glimmer of hope and happiness for Carmy and her team, that doesn’t mean things will go well in season two. Storer explains:
“They think they’re starting from a sane place, but a restaurant, like many other businesses, creates the same amount of problems and the same amount of headaches every day. So we see them having to escalate in a certain way, kind of regress, but hopefully they get back together to open this thing up by a very specific date.
He added:
“Winning is losing. The moment you feel you’ve won something, there’s immediately the next challenge… They are trying to run a more refined level of catering, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. It doesn’t mean that everyone thinks it’s the right thing to do. So obviously there’s an inner turmoil and there’s been some challenges there.
Owning and running my own business, I know what he’s talking about all too well. It’s a daily struggle to keep things going, and it’s a roller coaster ride filled with all kinds of good and bad. I think that’s one of the reasons I bonded so strongly with this show.
Anyway, are you excited for The bear Season 2!?
