‘Avatar’: Upcoming sequels expected to be cheaper to produce than ‘Water Way’

‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’ continues to hit theaters and amass an interesting fortune. James Cameron’s film grossed $1.75 billion worldwide. It is already the seventh highest-grossing film in history. (without adjusting for ticket price inflation), closing in on ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ to clinch the title of the top-grossing film of the pandemic era.

‘Avatar’: Upcoming sequels expected to be cheaper to produce than ‘Water Way’

But we have already talked at length about the excessive budget that the sequel to ‘Avatar’ had, which is estimated to be around $450 million. The higher the budget, having to add distribution and advertising expenses, the greater the need for a blockbuster to make a profit and for a studio, in this case Disney, to continue betting on the continuation of the franchise. ‘The Sense of Water’ is doing well enough that Cameron has already said that the next few films will continue. But most likely on a smaller budget.

According to Variety, Sources at 20th Century Studios say there will be “a substantial drop” in the money invested to make the three remaining films. Something that makes sense because most of “Avatar 3” has already been recorded together with “Avatar 2” (plus a little bit of “Avatar 4”). There is still a lot of post-production work and probably “retakes” on the horizon, but it is no longer starting completely from scratch as with ‘El sentido del agua’.

But don’t you want new toys?

Nor will it have to invest excessively in technology because the gap between sequel production won’t be as great as the more than ten years that elapsed between “Avatar” and its sequel, and the main trailers have already been developed for the second film. However, as they comment on Variety, it cannot be excluded that a fan of innovation like Cameron wants to start exploring new techniques to leave us speechless again. And that innovation costs money.

James Cameron will soon return to the set along with the cast led by Zoe Saldaña and Sam Worthington to arrive in time for releases “Avatar 3” on December 20, 2024 in theatersand hopefully “Avatar 4” in 2026 and “Avatar 5” in 2028.
