One of the greatest dramatic thrillers ever made was M. Night Shyamalanthe 1999 movie, The sixth sense. It had a great story, great acting, and a surprise ending that shocked the viewers. This was one of Shyamalan’s first films that he wrote and directed, and it is still his highest-grossing and most popular film of his career.

Part of the magic of the film was the incredible performances of the film’s stars, Haley Joel Osment, Tony CollettaAnd Bruce Willis. Looking back on his experience working with Willis, in the wake of the actor’s recent diagnosis and retirement, Shyamalan spoke with ReelBlend co-host Jake Hamilton about collaborating with Willis on the film, saying:

“He’s the blue-collar hero I grew up with, and not just for me but for Quentin as well [Tarantino] and West [Anderson], and you call it, Fifth Element. Every time, he’d take a chance and jump in, and when he believed in you, he’d be right behind you, and he’d be the muscle behind you to say, “Hey, go for it.” In Sixth Sense on the first Friday, they said ‘Bruce Willis wants to talk to you in the trailer about him’ I was like ‘Oh my god!’ I was in my 20s and I was like, ‘Oh no. He will yell at me.’ I went to the [trailer]…was like ‘I only felt it one more time, what you made me feel, [which was] with Pulp Fiction and Quentin.’ … It was hard to get on the good side of him, but once you did, he was your big brother and he fought for you through every circumstance.

It’s so cool! It’s kind of funny that Willis got to work on the films that really launched the careers of these two young filmmakers and that he recognized that they were doing something so big and groundbreaking. I still think about it The sixth sense with love. It was such a great movie and I’m glad Willis is the actor who was able to star in it and give us such a fantastic performance.
