‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’ has been sweeping the box office since it hit theaters in mid-December. James Cameron’s film was once again number 1 at the US box office last weekend, with an interim gross of around $82 million between Friday and Monday. Its worldwide total is close to $1.4 billion.

‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’ is about to start being profitable

That figure is especially important because it’s, according to Variety, the point at which the film would start to become profitable.. James Cameron already said it: ‘The Sense of Water’ had to become one of the highest-grossing films in history if it was to benefit Disney, in whose hands the future of the franchise is. It is currently the 14th highest grossing film of all time (not adjusted for inflation) and is poised to surpass ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ to become the 13th.

How is it possible that a film has to make nearly a billion and a half dollars to be profitable? Benefits of being one of the most expensive movies in history. It is estimated that the budget of ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’ would be around 460 million dollars (although a large part of ‘Avatar 3’ and some scenes of ‘Avatar 4’ were also filmed in the production of the sequel). To this must be added the costs of advertising and distribution of the tape, which usually represent more or less the same amount (or even more) than the production budget.. With Disney’s worldwide marketing spree to make the movie the movie event of the season, pundits concluded that it would need to raise that $1.4 billion to start turning a profit.

long way to go

At present, ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’ has raised $421.6 million in the United States and $956.9 million in the rest of the territories. In Spain it remained at number 1 at the box office throughout the New Year’s weekend, capping the best week since 2019 for cinema attendance, according to data from Comscore, and finished the year as the top-grossing film of 2022. The film still has plenty of room to continue growing its total box office, having little competition until nearly mid-February with its premiere of ‘ Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’. Pandora’s future seems assured.
