While “Avatar: The Meaning of Water” continues to hit theaters, James Cameron is already working on the next chapter of the saga, “Avatar 3″which will hit theaters at the end of 2024. The second sequel of ‘Avatar’ was filmed at the same time as ‘The Way of Water’, but it will require a lot of post-production and visual effects work, so difficult months ahead for the technical team headed by the director.

‘Avatar 3’ will introduce the fire Na’vi, the dark side of the creatures of Pandora

While we know little about ‘Avatar 3’ other than that we can expect the return of Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña as Jake and Neytiri and their large family, the plot involved is another story. But James Cameron said that if the first installment was about forests and the second about oceans, fire will be the main element of the third.

“There are more cultures than we have shown. The fire will be represented by the ‘people of ashes'” comments at 20 Minutes. With them he also wants to introduce some Na’vi not so benevolent as the clans we have known so far: “I want to reveal another side of the Na’vi because so far I have only shown their good side. In the early films there are examples of very negative humans and very positive Na’vis. In “Avatar 3″ we’ll do it the other way around”.

The director of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ has something to say

Eventually it turns out that the director of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ had reason to suspect where the filming of the ‘Avatar’ sequels would go. Gian Carlo Volpe tweeted days before the premiere of ‘The Sense of Water’ that 2004 they had to add ‘The Last Airbender’ to the Nickelodeon series title because James Cameron had already secured the film rights for the title ‘Avatar’ and they didn’t want any problems with him in future. But when he saw that the second film was about water, he said: “The sequel is called ‘The Sense of Water’. If the third is called ‘the masters of fire’ we rebel”.

Beyond the coincidences between the different audiovisual avatars, Cameron anticipates what will happen in the franchise: “We will also explore new universes by continuing the story of the main characters. I can say that the last few parts will be the best. The others were an introduction, a way of setting the table before serving the food.. But obviously everything will depend on the reception of ‘Avatar 2’, if it will find its audience.”. With $1.17 billion in receipts at the worldwide box office, we’d say he’s found it.

‘Avatar 3’ will be released in theaters December 20, 2024.
