One universal truth that most people can look back on and agree on is that high school was awful. I actually had a great high school experience overall, with good friends and fun experiences, but even then it was also the worst! A strange amount of time surrounded by hateful people you mostly hate who have strong differing opinions and raging hormones just to spice things up.

This is exactly why when Ryan Reynolds was offered a role in the series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, he declined, in an effort not to go back to his high school days. In an old interview with the Toronto Star in 2008 (before the show’s creator Joss Whedon was accused of being violent on set), Reynolds said:
“Love you [‘Buffy’] and I loved Joss Whedon…but my biggest concern was that I didn’t want to play a boy in high school. I was fresh out of high school and it was fucking awful.”
While it was never revealed, many speculate that Reynolds was offered the part of Xander Harris, the beloved character played by Nicholas Brendon. Reynolds had graduated from Kitsilano Secondary School in Vancouver in 1994 and was reportedly “harassed by bullies” in his youth. But he continued to star in the sitcom Two boys, a girl and a pizzeria in 1997, which ran for four seasons, and is now the Dead Pool star we all know and love.
