In just two weeks, The water way has already surpassed the global box office tallies of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (800 million dollars), The Batman ($770 million), Thor: Love and thunder ($760 million) and Minions: The Rise of Gru ($939 million). It is currently linked with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($955.7 million globally) as the third highest-grossing film of the year.
The film is expected to continue to dominate into the coming week, although harsh winter weather in the US and rising cases of COVID, RSV and flu worldwide have held back ticket sales. Over the next few days, Disney and the $350 million Disney and 20th Century tentpole The water way will reach the billion dollar mark. It is a threshold that only two other films, Top Gun: nonconformist ($1.48 billion) and Domination of the Jurassic World ($1.001 billion), managed to hit in 2022.
Cameron estimated the film needs to generate about $2 billion to break even, though analysts believe the profitability threshold is likely closer to $1.5 billion.
The report goes on, saying that although Avatar: The Way of Water is proving to be another powerful draw for the big screen, the follow-up film will struggle to reach the sky-high heights of its predecessor, which is the highest-grossing release in history with $2.97 billion worldwide . That’s because the global box office hasn’t fully recovered from the pandemic and major markets like China are experiencing a resurgence of the virus. The sequel also won’t play in Russia, where the original grossed over $100 million.
Like the original, The water way it is especially popular in IMAX. It has already surpassed $105.5 million globally on IMAX screens, marking the company’s fastest pandemic-era film to surpass that benchmark.
Have you already seen the movie? What do you think the box office number will stop at?
