The 78th Emmy Awards were held on Monday night at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, honoring the best television and streaming programs of the past year. The Emmys are often described as the Oscars of American television.
The comedy series Widow's Bay was the biggest winner of the night, taking home 11 awards and becoming the most-awarded comedy in Emmy history in a single ceremony. The Pitt and DTF St. Louis each won seven awards, making them two of the evening's other standout winners.
Jean Smart made history at the ceremony, winning best actress in a comedy series for her role as Deborah Vance in Hacks, a prize she has now claimed in each of the show's five seasons.
Last week, the Emmy Creative Arts Awards handed out several categories in advance, mostly technical honors. Shailene Woodley won her first Emmy, for best guest actress in a drama series for her work in Paradise, while Ernest Harden Jr. won for his role in The Pitt.
The ceremony was hosted by Mariska Hargitay, the first woman to hold the hosting role in 15 years.
