Hereford-born singer Ellie Goulding has released her new album, I Know Too Much, on Polydor Records, marking a tuneful four-star return to form for the artist.
The 39-year-old singer wrote the record while finding herself at a personal crossroads, following the announced end of her marriage to art dealer Caspar Jopling in 2024 and the birth of her second child earlier this year with actor Beau Minniear.
Goulding first achieved international recognition in 2010 by blending electronic beats with folky vocals as pop's girl next door. Polydor Records, a prominent British record label operating under Universal Music Group, has released her major recording projects throughout her career. Hereford, her hometown in the West Midlands near the Welsh border, formed the setting for her early life before she moved to London to pursue music full time.
Personal themes and production
When Goulding released her fifth album, Higher Than Heaven, in 2023, she declared it her least personal record yet. At a time when many of her peers were analysing their deepest emotions after lockdown, she chose instead to deliver a collection of dance-pop bangers.
Three years on, things are different. Mindful of the fickle nature of pop fame and how easily an artist can slip from hero to zero, Goulding has delivered an album of a more intimate hue that is not a traditional breakup record.
The new release looks witheringly at former flames and romantic delusions while celebrating the giddiness of new love. The album was produced alongside Toronto producer Jack Rochon, who previously worked on Beyoncé's 2024 country-inspired album Cowboy Carter. The production puts the onus back on Goulding's fluttery, high-pitched voice, showing an older and wiser artist returning to her core strengths.
Track breakdown and lyrics
The record opens with Black Prada Dress, a study of a toxic love affair that also reflects on the social media barbs faced by modern stars. On the track, Goulding dishes out barbs of her own, singing: "I'm trying to be a Hollywood baby, 'cause you make me think that London hates me."
On the acoustic ballad Always Think Of You, the singer pines for an old lover before conceding that the relationship was "one big mess of a stupid mistake." On Misremember You, she admits to a hopeless ex: "I still see you in a good light from time to time."
While Nobody Dances is a generic synth-pop number, the best moments of the album hark back to pop hooks and folky flourishes of old. The title track, I Know Too Much, is driven by finger-picked acoustic guitar, while the romantic track 4 Seasons moves from an acoustic introduction to a chiming finale. On 4 Seasons, Goulding sings: "I don't usually trust guys like you, but right now, I don't care."
Recent musical directions
Before releasing this intimate album, Goulding explored various musical styles, including dance music and R&B. In June, she featured as a guest vocalist on the album The Wow! Signal by English rock band Muse, singing in a swaggering, rocky style.
On I Know Too Much, Goulding has returned to dreamy pop melodies and revealing, self-aware lyrics, creating what critics have called her best album in years.
