Ophthalmologist Elena Kornilova, head of professional development at Johnson and Johnson LLC, warned that sudden eye redness can be a symptom of dangerous conditions in an interview with Lenta.ru.
Kornilova, who holds a candidate of medical sciences degree, said conjunctivitis is one of the most common and dangerous causes of suddenly reddened eyes. She explained that infectious conjunctivitis is usually caused by viruses or bacteria and spreads easily between people through contact with infected individuals or objects.
She added that allergic conjunctivitis can develop in response to triggers such as plant pollen, food products, dust mites, or animal hair. While symptoms vary by type, common signs include redness, itching, watery eyes, and the sensation of a foreign body in the eyes.
Causes of Eye Redness
Kornilova advised anyone experiencing these signs to see a doctor as soon as possible to select treatment. She also noted that eye dryness, discomfort, and redness can result from increased strain caused by prolonged use of gadgets.
Separately, ophthalmologist Anton Kazantsev previously listed habits that ruin vision in summer. He called using cheap dark glasses without a UV filter the biggest mistake.
