A driver is facing a fine of up to 6,000 euros after parking a car on the sand at Matalascañas beach in Huelva, Spain, in the early hours of Wednesday.
The Almonte Local Police described the incident as a lack of respect for the natural environment and reminded the public that driving and parking on the beach are expressly prohibited. Officers filed a complaint immediately after discovering the vehicle at the water’s edge.
The Almonte Local Police stated in a social media post that a vehicle had reached the shoreline of Matalascañas beach, calling the behaviour entirely incompatible with the respect the natural environment deserves.
Under Spain’s Coastal Law 22/1988, the maritime-terrestrial public domain is not a car park. Driving or parking on the sand without authorisation can result in fines scaled to the damage caused, up to a maximum of 6,000 euros in the most serious cases.
Police also said that enjoying beaches means looking after them and respecting the rules, and called on the public to preserve Matalascañas as the unique environment it is. Authorities said they shared the incident publicly to discourage similar behaviour in the future.
