The Walt Disney Company is developing a new animated Darkwing Duck series for its Disney+ streaming service, bringing the superhero duck back to television screens. The creators of the project have released the first image of the character in his traditional costume.
The upcoming animated series is set 35 years after the events of the original show. According to the plot, Drake Mallard returns to superhero activity for the first time in many years, working alongside his teenage fan.
Disney has not yet announced an official release date for the project, which will be available exclusively on the online streaming platform Disney+.
Voice cast and production team
The series features a star-studded voice cast in its main roles. Actor Mark Hamill, famous for portraying Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars film saga, leads the voice cast alongside actor and filmmaker Seth Rogen, known for the comedy series The Studio. The voice lineup also includes Lizzy Caplan, who has performed voice work on The Simpsons, and Dan Stevens, featured in the television drama Dexter: Resurrection, alongside other cast members.
Sean Tretta and Borja Peña Gorostegui will serve as the showrunners for the new series. Tretta previously worked on Star Trek: Picard, while Gorostegui is known for his work on the animated project Lost and Crowned.

The original Darkwing Duck animated project was produced by Disney Television Animation and originally aired in the early 1990s as part of Disney block animation programming. The classic show followed Drake Mallard, an ordinary suburban resident who assumes a masked superhero alter ego to fight criminal villains in the fictional city of St. Canard.
