The Derril Water solar power plant in Devon has been shut down until September over fears of electrical grid overload, according to The Guardian. The decision to disconnect Britain's largest solar facility was made without prior warning or agreement with site management.
The National Energy System Operator ordered National Grid to disconnect the facility in north-west England for the rest of the summer. Officials cited concerns over thermal overload, a condition where excessive energy flow causes equipment to overheat and risk failure.
Grid issues in North Devon were first recorded in 2023. Infrastructure upgrades originally scheduled for completion at the end of 2025 have been delayed until at least September 2026.
Financial losses for investors
The shutdown will prevent the plant from generating clean energy and cause estimated financial losses of about two million pounds sterling. Around 9,500 financial investors in the project will miss out on dividend payments in the near future.
Derril Water's volunteer board of directors told The Guardian that most investors understand the problem lies with the grid rather than the plant. However, frustration remains because neither network operators nor insurance companies plan to compensate for the lost revenue.
Grid overload and home solar equipment
Temporary closures of solar facilities also occur elsewhere. A 2 billion dollar solar plant in California previously stopped operating due to generation technology issues, while Derril Water was halted because local grid infrastructure could not handle the output volume.
For home solar installations, an installation engineer at Solar stated that single solar panels cost between 90 and 130 dollars depending on power output. Most private houses select 5 kW systems, though consumers often make calculation errors regarding their electricity consumption.
