Dark skin spots can be treated with masks or laser care

Dark spots caused by sun exposure, aging and hormones can be reduced using cosmetic products or dermatological laser treatments, according to experts.

Dark skin spots can be treated with masks or laser care

Dark spots on the skin affect individuals across all skin types but can be effectively reduced using remedies that range from affordable face masks to professional laser procedures, presenter Julie Tomei explained on the French broadcast segment Bonjour! Avec vous.

According to Dr Melanie Herz, a general practitioner specializing in aesthetic medicine, hyperpigmentation is a widespread dermatological issue driven by three primary factors.

Herz explained that sun exposure is the leading cause of dark spots because melanin, the natural pigment responsible for skin tanning, increases abnormally and distributes unevenly. Ultraviolet radiation from sunlight stimulates pigment-producing cells, causing stubborn spots to form on exposed areas.

She noted that natural skin aging also plays a significant role in discoloration. As skin cells suffer damage over time, they overproduce pigment as a protective response. Furthermore, hormonal shifts during pregnancy or from taking contraceptive pills can trigger melasma, a severe form of facial discoloration commonly referred to as the mask of pregnancy.

Cosmetic solutions and skincare options

Dermatologists emphasize that dark spots are not permanent, and several cosmetic products can successfully slow down melanin production to restore an even tone. Face masks containing niacinamide, which retail for approximately 6 euros, help hydrate the skin while blocking pigment transfer between cells.

Night creams enriched with active ingredients derived from lemon work during sleep, utilizing natural citrus compounds to brighten dark patches. In addition, certain skincare brands have patented specialized molecules such as thiamidol, an ingredient recommended by the global dermatological consensus for its ability to target pigment enzymes.

Despite the variety of topical treatments available, experts stress that daily sunscreen application remains the single most critical product. Sunscreen shields the skin from ultraviolet rays, preventing existing minor imperfections from darkening further.

Clinical procedures and costs

When over the counter skincare items fail to clear persistent spots, dermatological laser treatment offers an ultimate medical solution. Laser devices emit focused light beams that penetrate the skin to break apart dense clusters of excess pigment.

Clinical laser therapy costs between 80 and 100 euros per session. Patients must pay for these treatments out of pocket, as the French national healthcare system, known as Securite Sociale, classifies laser spot removal as elective aesthetic care and does not reimburse the cost.
