Actress Dakota Fanning has reflected on the intense fan obsession surrounding Twilight, revealing that lead stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart initially believed they were making a small low-budget film.
Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the 32-year-old star shared memories from her time on the cult vampire saga. She said the main cast members had no idea how massive the franchise would eventually become before its release.
Fanning recalled that the full scale of the fandom only hit the cast when they attended the Comic-Con festival. She said the group was overwhelmed by a wild wave of fan passion, describing the sudden reaction as super intense.
The San Diego Comic-Con convention frequently serves as a launching pad for major Hollywood releases. Twilight, based on the bestselling book series by Stephenie Meyer, quickly turned into a global box office phenomenon following its 2008 debut.
Role in the Volturi clan
Fanning appeared in the franchise as Jane, a cruel vampire belonging to the powerful Volturi clan. The Volturi serve as the ruling authority within the fictional vampire universe, enforcing laws to keep their existence hidden from humans.
The actress noted that her limited screen time worked to her advantage. Fanning said her episodic appearance helped her avoid the wild psychological pressure that landed squarely on the lead actors.
Pattinson and Stewart led the series as Edward Cullen and Bella Swan, experiencing intense media scrutiny throughout the production of the five movies. Fanning had already established herself as a prominent Hollywood performer prior to joining the cast, having started her career as a child actor in major films.
Cast reactions to early filming
Stewart has also expressed awkwardness regarding her early mindset on set. The actress previously admitted that she and Pattinson approached the first movie far too seriously while filming.
She said the pair attempted to transform a teenage vampire story into a deep drama during production. Stewart acknowledged that looking back at that serious approach now feels foolish to her.
