Coffee triggers morning bowel movements, doctor explains

General practitioner Amir Khan has explained why drinking coffee frequently triggers an urgent need to empty the bowel, speaking in an interview with British newspaper The Mirror.

According to Dr Khan, feeling the urge to use the bathroom after eating or drinking is a normal bodily response, particularly during the early morning hours.

He explained that this immediate urge is driven by the gastrointestinal reflex, a natural physiological mechanism where food or liquid entering an empty stomach prompts contractions inside the colon. The colon, also known as the large intestine, is the final section of the digestive tract responsible for absorbing remaining water and compacting waste before elimination.

Dr Khan added that caffeine significantly amplifies this reaction because it stimulates the body to produce gastrin. Gastrin is a vital digestive hormone that regulates stomach acid secretion, assists in breaking down food, and promotes intestinal peristalsis.

Peristalsis refers to the series of wave-like muscular contractions that push digestive contents through the gastrointestinal tract. By triggering higher levels of gastrin, caffeine accelerates these involuntary muscle movements throughout the gut.

How caffeine affects morning digestion

The doctor noted that gastrin is produced with particular intensity following an overnight fast, when the stomach has been empty for many hours during sleep. As a result, the first beverage consumed in the morning exerts a stronger influence on the digestive system.

Dr Khan reassured readers that experiencing a sudden bowel movement after morning coffee is not a sign of diarrhoea. Diarrhoea involves loose or watery stools often caused by infections or digestive distress, whereas coffee simply prompts a routine waste elimination.

The general practitioner concluded that the morning urge simply demonstrates that the bowel is waking up on schedule and carrying out its normal function. General practitioners are primary care physicians who evaluate routine medical symptoms and provide preventative health advice to patients.

Coffee impact on sleep quality

The digestive insights follow previous health warnings concerning the broader physiological effects of coffee consumption. Neurologist Lidia Chizhikova previously identified coffee as the single most harmful beverage for human sleep quality.

Chizhikova explained that drinking coffee reduces overall sleep quality, even when an individual does not consciously feel its invigorating or awakening effects. Neurologists are medical specialists who diagnose and treat disorders of the nervous system, which governs sleep architecture and brain activity.

The Mirror is a major national daily newspaper in the United Kingdom that regularly reports on health guidance, lifestyle news, and medical research.
