Coffee Stimulates Digestion and Prevents Bile Stagnation

Nutritionist Viktoria Kostrova reveals how drinking plain coffee stimulates gallbladder contractions, improves bile flow, and aids digestive health.

Coffee Stimulates Digestion and Prevents Bile Stagnation

Drinking coffee can stimulate gallbladder function and improve digestion, according to nutritionist and preventive dietitian Viktoria Kostrova in an interview with UfaTime.ru.

Kostrova explained that the natural bitterness and caffeine in coffee trigger contractions in the gallbladder. This process helps keep bile flowing smoothly and prevents stagnation inside the organ.

Proper bile movement directly supports the digestive system by aiding the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and promoting effective intestinal cleansing.

The gallbladder is a small digestive organ located beneath the liver. It stores bile, a fluid produced by the liver that breaks down fats into fatty acids during digestion. When bile stagnates, it can lead to digestive discomfort or the formation of gallstones. Maintaining regular gallbladder contractions is therefore an important component of gastrointestinal health.

Antioxidants and Disease Prevention

Beyond its effects on bile flow, Kostrova noted that coffee contains active compounds including polyphenols and chlorogenic acid. These substances assist the human body in fighting internal inflammation and reducing oxidative stress. She added that regular coffee consumption lowers the overall risk of developing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and metabolic syndrome.

Polyphenols are a broad category of natural plant compounds recognized for their antioxidant properties, which protect cellular structures from damage caused by unstable free radicals. Chlorogenic acid is a major antioxidant ester found in coffee beans that has been linked to metabolic regulation. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is characterized by an excessive accumulation of fat within liver cells in individuals who consume little to no alcohol. Metabolic syndrome refers to a cluster of co-occurring conditions, such as elevated blood pressure, high blood sugar, and excess abdominal fat, that collectively raise the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Guidelines for Healthy Consumption

To obtain these digestive and metabolic benefits, Kostrova emphasized that coffee must be consumed plain. Adding sugar, milk, or flavored syrups can neutralize the positive health effects of the drink. She also stressed the necessity of moderation, advising individuals to limit their intake to no more than three cups of espresso or filter coffee per day.

Espresso is brewed by forcing pressurized hot water through finely ground coffee beans, resulting in a concentrated shot with a layer of foam. Filter coffee relies on gravity to draw hot water through coarsely ground coffee beans held in a paper or metal filter, yielding a lighter liquid. Preventive dietitians focus on dietary adjustments that help prevent chronic medical conditions before clinical symptoms develop.

In additional dietary commentary, dietitian Anita Mirchandani previously recommended eating peanuts for individuals who wish to raise their daily protein intake. Mirchandani identified peanuts as one of the top food options for high protein content.
