The Black Film Critics Circle named The Woman King the best film of 2022

Mike Sargent, co-chair of the BFCC, announced the winners Thursday after votes were cast and tabulated at the organization’s annual meeting Dec. 17 in New York.

The BFCC recognized achievements in the theater and awarded prizes in 13 categories. Special awards were also presented to industry pioneers and rising stars, with Davis winning the Pioneer Award, Horn for Jesus. save your soul‘s Adamma Ebo wins Rising Star and take care Director Nikyatu Jusu wins Special Mention.

“2022 has been a fantastic year for films by and with people of color. The fact that we have films from multiple countries, in multiple genres, and their success has reinforced a huge shift that actors like Sidney Poitier opened the doors for many decades ago,” said Sargent. “We may have lost a film industry giant this year, but everything he stood for and broke barriers paid off. Our stories matter and the world is paying attention.”

Co-chairman Wilson Morales added: “Elvis Mitchell’s documentary Is it black enough for you?! explores the history, craft and heritage of African American film and sheds light on the rich history of our contributions to the medium of film. One day the times we live in will be seen as a new renaissance of black film. Congratulations to all winners.”

This year’s BFCC Pioneer Award goes to Viola Davis who, to quote BFCC member KA GRANT (KAGrant.com), “The queen of women was really a matter of heart for her as a producer and as an actress. Not only did she work tirelessly to bring this story to life, but she also transformed her physical appearance to be battle ready for the film. Her contribution to what she has done for black women on the big screen is immeasurable. Their passion and dedication to their craft embodies the essence of the word Pioneer.”

This year’s BFCC Rising Star Award for Producing, Writing and Directing goes to Adamma Ebo for her feature directorial debut for Horn for Jesus. save your soul To quote BFCC member Harrison Martin (FLIXFROG): “A truly outstanding film, well written, acted and directed. It’s a great example of how you can improve a short film and still keep the same message.”

Nikyatu Jusu
