Director Baz Luhrmann Reveals His Most Dangerous Movie Set Yet: ‘It Almost Killed Me’

Australian filmmaker Baz Luhrmann has spoken candidly about the difficulties he faced while making his 2008 film Australia.

In a recent cover story with Deadline, the 60-year-old artist described the challenges he faced during the film’s production.

“As a movie experience, it was by far the most tense,” he said.

“We got hit with horse flu… I went to the desert to shoot and it rained for the first time in 150 years, so I had a grass desert.

Despite all the drama on the set, the passionate filmmaker did not give up.

“It almost killed me, but I wouldn’t go a day without it … I’ve been in it so far,” he said.

“At one point Martin Scorsese was involved and we were building studios in Morocco … it was such an adventure, but there came a point where I really couldn’t do it for personal reasons.”

Australia is about a British noblewoman who inherited a cattle ranch in the country before World War II.

Before filming Australia, Baz ended his engagement with Alexander the Great – which starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Mel Gibson – so he could film Australia.

A reimagined film was set in motion by director Oliver Stone, starring Val Kilmer and Colin Farrell as Philip II and Alexander.
