Many attempts have been made to film the Fantômas novels, but only the 1960s trilogy became popular. The main role in it was played by actor Jean Mare. He had to hide his spectacular appearance behind an ugly mask.
He wore a rubber mask for hours. It even irritated him. The actor was even more offended by the director’s idea to give the hero a new voice. Then Mare said that his name should not be mentioned in the credits at all, because the viewer would not see or hear him. The director managed to convince him, and the role glorified the artist.
