The Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, are known by many names in the UK. (And no, I’m not just referring to nicknames like “Wills” and “Kate.”)
When William and Kate they married in 2011, Queen Elizabeth gave the prince the following titles: the Duke of Cambridge, that of the Earl of Strathearn (a Scottish peerage) and that of the Baron of Carrickfergus (an Irish peerage). Kate therefore received the titles of duchess of cambridgeCountess of Strathearn and Baroness of Carrickfergus.
However, after the death of the queen, it is expected that king charles iii transfer your former title, Prince of Wales, to his eldest son. Although it has not yet been confirmed that he will do so – King Charles is the one who must make that decision – it is considered very likely that William will become Prince of Wales, a title reserved exclusively for the heir to the British throne. That would convert to Kate in the Princess of Walesa title that has not been held since Princess Diana passed away in 1997. (Camilla, it may be recalled, did not take the title of Princess of Wales out of respect for Diana.)
There are some titles that are transmitted immediately: Carlos, for example, became king immediately after the announcement of the death of Queen Elizabeth. Likewise, William, as the eldest son of the reigning monarch, immediately inherits the title of Duke of Cornwall. And, you guessed it, that makes Kate the new Duchess of Cornwall.
Within hours of the queen’s passing on September 8, the Cambridges had updated their Twitter accounts to reflect this additional title. Now they are the Duke and the Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge.

Titles are part of the royal turf, but in an effort to modernize the monarchy, royals have started using their given names, introducing themselves as “William” or “Catherine” instead of a royal slang salad.
Suffice it to say that if you meet the Prince William or Kate Middleton in real life, you don’t have to panic when googling its many titles. A simple “Hello, Wills and Kate” will (probably) suffice.
