Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby turns 49 this Friday as Crown Princess of Norway. Thanks to her marriage to Haakon, she has managed to live her life on a path few tread and has achieved the title of His Royal Highness. A process that hasn’t been much of wine and roses since she had to endure harsh criticism for being a commoner and winning the heart of a prince. A widespread injustice in the royal ballad, but he eventually had to face it, but his feeling served as an incentive to overcome the vicissitudes.
It was on August 19, 1973 in Kristiansand, the result of the marriage between Sven Olaf Bjarne Høiby, a journalist by profession, and Marit Tjessem, when Mette Marit was born. His childhood was anything but sweet as his father suffered from alcoholism and attended his parents’ divorce when he was only 11 years old. She enrolled in philosophy at Bjørknes private school in Oslo and took chemistry and IKT exams at Agder High School, studies she could afford by studying as a waitress. His childhood was spent with maybe too many nights out and the occasional drug flirting. In 1997, she had her first child, Marius Borg, the result of her affair with Morten Borg, who was convicted of cocaine smuggling.
Everything changed when the Norwegian prince appeared in her life, whom she met at a rock music festival. They fell madly in love and let their passion run wild. In certain parts of Norway and near the palace it was not very easy to see that Harald V’s son was in a relationship with a commoner with a somewhat dark gait, as well as with a single mother. She didn’t care at all they moved in together, also with the princess’s firstborn of today. When they announced their engagement, they were met with criticism and this is how Mette-Marit looked back a few years later: “I was in an environment where a lot of schedules were broken and, frankly, I’m sorry. I had experiences before that. there is no doubt where I am today, I would like to take this opportunity to condemn drugs, but as much as I want to, I cannot take back or change the past.”
Fortunately, with her charisma and devotion to the crown, she managed to turn people’s minds around and is currently much loved by almost all of Norway. His life, however, is determined by the pulmonary fibrosis that he was diagnosed in 2018 and that sometimes causes pitfalls in his health.
Haakon and Mette-Marit crossed paths in the late 90s, through mutual friends, at the rock music Quart Festival. Years later they would meet again on the same stage and that’s where love started.
On December 1, 2000, the Norwegian royal family made the pledge public and a strong controversy arose, sponsored by those who did not approve of the crown prince’s marriage to a commoner.
They received a lot of criticism of the princess’s past, somewhat hectic on a personal level. So much so that Haakon had to ask for understanding when he made a commitment to her.
On August 25, 2001 they said yes I do that in a packed cathedral in Oslo. The prince wore the military uniform while the princess opted for a wedding dress by Norwegian couturier Ove Harder Finseth.
Both Haakon and Mette-Marit have good friends within the European royal family. One of his best friends is the King of Spain. Felipe VI has had a very good relationship with the Norwegians for decades. He attended her wedding and became godfather to her daughter Ingrid. This same year they came together in Paris to enjoy the Roland Garros final in which Rafa Nadal took on the young Nordic talent Casper Ruud. The Spaniards won, but the three royals showed their good relationship.
The last time we saw Haakon and his wife posing in a family photo was in the official portrait taken by the Royal House of Norway on the anniversary to celebrate the princess’s coming of age. Ingrid Alexandra. Sitting in the front row we see King Harald, Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Queen Sonia. Just behind it, from left to right, we see her grandmother Marit Tjessem, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, Crown Prince Haakon, Marius Borg Hoiby and Prince Sverre Magnus of Norway.
