Producer Janet Young was elected president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences by the organization’s board of directors at a meeting on Tuesday.
He replaces David Rubin, who has served as president for the past three years but has been removed because he has reached the maximum number of years he can serve on the board without interruption, under the academy’s rules.
Young’s victory comes as no surprise, as he has been a major name in office for the past few weeks and was honored at the Academy’s museum earlier this summer.
“Janet is an extremely dedicated and strategic leader with an incredible track record in academia,” AMPAS Executive Director Bill Kramer said in a statement. “You have been instrumental in launching and promoting various Academy initiatives on member recruitment, governance and equity, diversity and inclusion. I am delighted that he will take on the esteemed role of Academy President and look forward to working closely with him on our shared vision to serve our members, celebrate the collective art and science of film and inspire the next generation. of directors.

Young begins his first term as president and his second term as governor, having been appointed by the current president of the academy and elected by the board of governors. Gigliotti, Karaszewski, Linde, Mussenden and Thomas were re-elected officers. This will be the first official mandate for Dorman, Howell Taylor and Taylor-Coleman.
Young’s extensive film production credits include Lucky Club, The People vs. Larry Flynt, Zero Effect, Shanghai Calling and an Oscar-nominated animated film on the moon. She won an Emmy for the HBO movie. Prosecution: the McMartin trial. A member of the Academy’s producer branch since 2002, Young recently served on the board of directors as vice president and chairman of the members committee and, before that, the members and governance committee.
