The creators were not held back, even by the millions spent on the pilot series.
HBO put huge amounts of money into the Game of Thrones prequel pilot, but the result was so horrific that the studio immediately canceled the Blood Moon project. Only now, three years later, did it become known why that fateful episode was so bad.
Former Warner Media chairman Robert Greenblatt says the studio’s $35 million investment went to charity and the series could look good. But HBO was not happy with the quality of the script.
“The episode was well done and quirky, but fell short of the original show. It didn’t have the depth and richness that the Game of Thrones pilot had,” former Warner Media chairman Robert Greenblatt told The Hollywood Reporter.
It also turned out that the author of the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, George Martin, who, by the way, co-authored the show’s script, didn’t believe in the project. The series was supposed to be set at a time that Martin very vaguely described in the books, so there was practically nothing to film from.
