Grammy host Trevor Noah began a tribute video to the late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins with the following words:
“That was the moment on the show where I had to meet the Foo Fighters. Let’s celebrate with them because they won three Grammy Awards the day before. But they certainly aren’t here due to the death of their legendary drummer, Taylor Hawkins. Our thoughts are with Taylor’s family, his friends, the Foo Fighter family and all of his fans.
He then repaired a large Hawkins installation by working on Foos’ That’s where my hero goes. This directly changed the show’s traditional tribute to In Memoriam.
During the show, this wasn’t the only reference to a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame drummer.
Earlier in the night, Billy Elish was wearing a Hawkins t-shirt when he performed the song “Happy Than Ever”.
The group announced Hawkins’ death on Twitter on Friday. At the time of his death, the group was traveling to South America. Hawkins was reportedly found dead in a hotel room in Bogotá, Colombia, where the Foo Fighters had a stereo picnic at a festival in Bogotá on Friday night after a tour of Latin America.
Following his death, the Pantheon of Rock Gods paid tribute to the late online drummer, including Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne, Slash, Tom Morello, Perry Ferrell, Gene Simmons, The Smashing Pumpkins, and more.
The Foo Fighters won three Grammy Awards during the previous show, including Best Rock Song, Best Rock Album, and Best Rock Performance.
