If you thought you have already seen everything in David Tennant – good – Benatured investigators, demonic demons, alien tramps – then you certainly missed Desa.
This is a three-party British mini-series, in which Tennant does not play a hero, but one of the most terrible serial killers of the 20th century.
In the UK he produced a splash, he received the international “Emmy” and in Russia he remained almost unnoticed – he only has about 10 thousand reviews in Kinopoisk and modest 6.9 points.
The plot is based on real events. In 1983 the London police arrested a modest clerk named Dennis Nilsen. The reason was the banal clogged waste water – within the remains were found. Later it turned out that he attracted young men and adolescents to his house for five years, killed and hid his bodies in the apartment and in pipes. Six murders were proven, but he himself admitted at least in a dozen.

The series starts with the arrest of Nilsen. In the first series, researchers were shocked by the scale of crimes that have occurred under their noses for years. The second part is devoted to the study and the third is the process. The most important role is played by Tennant, and so convincing that according to the film team he tried not to communicate with the rest of the actors during filming – to maintain the distance and psychological alienation of his hero.
The director is Lewis Arnold, who previously worked on the ‘Murder on the beach’. It was he who persuaded Tennant to read the script, and, as the makers later remembered, it was the permission of the actor who gave the project the chance to be removed.
Why is it worthwhile to view “Desa”:
- Only three episodes. Without long -term, without passing episodes, without “a different season in which everyone just walks and looks at the floor.”
- It was completely removed by one director. Full control over the tone and visual style.
- The script without attempts to tear a tear. Events are served cold and immediately, such as a file – without cheap tricks.
- The game is tennant. A completely different side of the actor, who you won’t see in the “Doctor Who”, nor in “Good Drawing”.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the series has 90% of the critics and 97% of the audience. And if you are a fan of “Murder on the Beach” and you think there is nothing to look at afterwards – “Desi” will be very fast.
