Stephen King called this horror film 2025 one of the best films of the 21st century

While the whole world is discussing the next sequel and cinematic sessions, Stephen King suddenly emphasized a modest low -budget horror in his list of the best films of the 21st century The Rule by Jenny Pen (“The place of residence of death” in the Russian cash register) is a film that no one has noticed in Russia.

In Kinopoisk he has miserable 5.7 points and only about two thousand reviews, and he passed almost imperceptibly at the checkout. Nevertheless, King placed him in his personal top 10.

The film was released in a limited circulation in cinemas and then stroked shudder, where he found his (modestly modest) audience. Nevertheless, he remains almost unknown to the general public, which is especially strange – given the names in the main roles: John Litgou and Jeffrey Rush.

King noted the film for a combination of different techniques that he is favorite:

  • Closed, insulated space that causes associations with “radiation”
  • Everyday Objects endowed with supernatural power
  • Social subtext is the theme of old age, loneliness and helplessness as a source of real horror

What is the movie about

The protagonist is judge Stefan (Jeffrey Rush), who enters the budget house of the elderly after a stroke. There he notices the strange behavior of a neighbor in the department – Dave Krile (Litgou), who is not part of a doll named Jenny Pan. It is gradually becoming clear that Krili terrorizes other inhabitants by this doll, including Stefan himself.

At the same time, the film mysticism emphasizes: the doll is not animated, there is no magic. Everything is built with psychological pressure, visual metaphors and an alarming atmosphere. The camera often grabs the “corner” movements in sight, the viewer is not sure if he had seen it at all. Instead of cheap screamers, the film uses a feeling of inevitable threat.

Why King is excited

  • The story is not about spirits, but about people: about aging, loss of control over the body
  • Violence is committed by the hands of those who are stereotyped by harmless
  • Visually the film is minimalist, but extremely expressive

“The Abode of Death” is an example of how even a room horror can be included in the list of “Best of the Best” without an advertising campaign if there is something really terrible in it. Not external, but internally. And when this says Stephen King, he would probably have to believe him.
