While colleagues in the workshop discuss what is better – Tiktok of Threads, Ed Shiran lives in parallel reality.
Without a phone. Without instant messagers. Without constant reports. And no, this is not a temporary “digital detox”, but a conscious lifestyle that the singer follows for ten years.
In the new podcast The CollectorS Edition Shiran said he had not used a mobile phone since 2015 – neither a smartphone nor even a button. He keeps communication with the outside world through the post. Yes, just electronically. From time to time it opens a laptop, answers a dozen letters and closes everything again next time.
Why did Shiran even refuse the phone?

In 2015 he announced for the first time that he left social networks and refused the phone. According to him, “he stopped the world with his own eyes – only through the screen.”
Since then he only communicates through a working e-mail and checks it every few days. And, as he gives himself, this turned out to be a great relief:
“I no longer wake up in the morning with 50 messages and requests. I just drink tea.”
In 2019 he left the public space again after the Divide tour and promised to return “when he said.” As a result, he appeared on social networks to announce the birth of his daughter and the release of the new album.
Shiran admitted that the phone started to influence the psyche. He felt guilty if he did not answer messages at once and literally could not concentrate on live communication:
“You sit during dinner, have a serious conversation and suddenly in your pocket vibrations. Even if you don’t get the phone – his thoughts no longer with the conversation partner, but with this message: who is it? What did you want? Do you have to answer?”
And how does he live without a phone?
- Only maintains a connection by e-mail
- His team leads to social networks
- It rarely seems online – mainly to announce releases or to share an important event
According to the musician, to leave the phone – “the best solution in life.” He started to worry less, to communicate more live and to feel real involvement at the moment.
