The film about the flights to the stars, which once almost unnoticed, suddenly started to be called the best in their genre today – and even be put above the interstellar.
Although more than a quarter of a century has passed, the tape remains surprisingly relevant. But for the Russian audience this is still an almost unknown title.
We are talking about the film “Contact” by Robert Zemeckis, released in 1997. Then he was cool: Too serious, too philosophically, too unscientifically fantastic for the mass audience. But today – years later – he finally found a place in the reviews and lists of ‘forgotten masterpieces’. Especially against the background of a new wave of interest in Sci-Fi after the success of “Interstellar” and “Arrival”.

In the middle of the plot is the astronomer Ellie HerroWay, who devoted life to the search for extraterrestrial life. When contact with her finally happens, the heroine should not fight so much with alien beings such as Earthers: with scientists, officials, religious activists and their own love. It sounds like a drama, and it is partly.
In contrast to most fiction of the 90s, “contact” is not about lasers and monsters, but about asking that there were no simple answers even after 28 years.
The most important roles were played by Jodie Foster and the young Matthew McConahs – even before he started saving humanity in the Interstellar. In a surprising way, these two films after almost 20 years found themselves in a dialogue with each other: one with a scientific bias, the other with an emotional philosophical, but about loneliness, faith and space as a mirror of a person.
