And how quickly could the judges watch them to the end?

When it comes to the Oscars, most people immediately think of moving dramas, social thrillers or, at worst, big-budget blockbusters. However, some of the most violent and dark films have also received this prestigious award.

These films impress not only with their dark atmosphere and complex plots, but also with their shocking cruelty. Our selection includes 10 films that, despite their harshness, have received recognition from the Film Academy and have written their names in the history of the Oscars.

In fact, most Oscar winners for Best Picture are rated R, meaning they definitely contain some level of violence or suspense. But one film from our selection has an even higher rating – and now it’s truly historic for the Oscars.

We are talking about Midnight Cowboy. This movie is rated X – nowadays such a movie would get an NC-17 matrix. This rating means that people under 17 are not allowed to watch such a movie because of the bold content.

But the risky assessment didn’t stop 1969’s Midnight Cowboy from winning not only Best Picture, but also Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. So far, the film has a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes rating, with 89% from critics and 88% from audiences.
