His words will surprise many.
Joker was the biggest hit of 2019, grossing over a billion dollars at the box office.
Although Arthur Fleck’s story was never intended to be a franchise, Todd Phillips and Warner Bros. found a way to expand the plot for a sequel titled ‘Madness for Two’.

The sequel is set to hit theaters on October 4, so it’s no surprise that fans are wondering if they can expect a full-fledged trilogy.
To this the director gave a disappointing answer: he plans to move away from the gloomy cinematic universe:
“It was fun to play two movies in this sandbox, but I think we’ve said everything we wanted to say.”
Like this.

In the same interview with Variety, Phillips talked about what he’d like to do in the future, admitting that he’d like to work with Joaquin Phoenix again, but this time on a comedy.
“He can be so relaxed and funny. I think people are missing something funny right now. We can all use a good laugh,” the director said.
A rather unexpected statement, but only at first glance.
Phillips has had considerable success in the genre before (most notably with the Hangover films), and the world of Joker is brutal and grueling, so it’s hard to fault him for wanting to move on to something more positive.
