Oscar shortlists announced in 10 categories: “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer,” “Maestro” and more

Not only is today important for the solstice and the transition from fall to winter, it’s also the first bell in the Oscar race, as the Academy has just announced the semifinalists in 10 categories.

15 films will each advance to the International Feature Film, Documentary, Original Song and Musical Score Competitions as well as the Documentary, Animated Film and Live Action Short Film categories. Today, ten films each won in the categories of sound, visual effects and make-up and hair styling.

It is not surprising that it is the 2023 box office winner Barbie leads the shortlist with five entries, including Original Score, Sound and three for Original Song, but oddly didn’t make the cut for Hair & Makeup. The shortlists are highly anticipated because they are an early indication of which films have strong support in certain parts of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and which may be overlooked. There are always surprises.
