Not only is today important for the solstice and the transition from fall to winter, it’s also the first bell in the Oscar race, as the Academy has just announced the semifinalists in 10 categories.
15 films will each advance to the International Feature Film, Documentary, Original Song and Musical Score Competitions as well as the Documentary, Animated Film and Live Action Short Film categories. Today, ten films each won in the categories of sound, visual effects and make-up and hair styling.
It is not surprising that it is the 2023 box office winner Barbie leads the shortlist with five entries, including Original Score, Sound and three for Original Song, but oddly didn’t make the cut for Hair & Makeup. Martin Scorsese Flower Moon Killer (including two for late music icon Robbie Robertson in Score and Song) and JA Bayona’s Spanish Oscar entry Association of snow Next come four of each. Several photos incl Oppenheimer, The Color Purple, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Poor Things, Napoleon Is American Symphony are connected in groups of three.
The shortlists are highly anticipated because they are an early indication of which films have strong support in certain parts of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and which may be overlooked. There are always surprises. For example, with the recent announcement of twenty semifinalists for visual effects, they are believed to be the frontrunners Oppenheimer not even done yet The cut, so you won’t see Christopher Nolan’s historic feat on at least one list released today. On the other hand, these lists—even if they don’t include categories like picture, acting, directing, screenplay, cinematography, editing, production and costume design, or animated film—may still point to an unexpected candidate.
Last year the eventual winner of the international film and nominated for best film No news from the Western Front Five top entries have been shortlisted, including sound, visual effects, make-up and hair, and original music and international films. The film was nominated in all five categories and won two of those Oscars as well as two other categories that were not shortlisted.
Perhaps a sign that there is another Netflix International film entry, that of Spain snow bandage, Perhaps on the same track, the JA Bayona movie made four lists in total, it just missed the mark in terms of what Everyone quiet in the Oscar nominations on its way to consistently huge success. The shortlists again indicate a possible surprise for Netflix, which has also done well with two previous entries Master, and the documentary by Jon Batiste, American Symphony with three entries.
Expressed in numbers, Although Barbie led all newcomers with five entries, three of which are for songs, and AMPAS rules state that only two songs from a film can be nominated for the final, so essentially Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon, Association of the Snow are the only films today that have a chance to actually be nominated in the four different categories. Another international film certification with three mentions (including sound and film music) The zone of interest shows the A24’s particular strength as a shortlist indicator of future glory.
Negatives in the song category included Golden Globe nominee Bruce Springsteen’s “Addicted To Romance” from the little-seen film. she came to me and Jack Black’s Golden Globe and Critics Choice-nominated film “Peaches.” The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Disney, usually a staple in the song category, was also omitted from its Critics Choice Award nominee “The Wish,” and in fact, Searchlight’s “The Fire Inside” was the only song to make it through a Disney event. Flamin’ Hot. Of course, this song belongs to Diane Warren, a 14-time nominee and honorary Oscar winner who regularly appears on these lists each year. Another musical note: John Williams is looking for his 54th Oscar nomination for his film scores Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Don’t bet against Warren and Williams when the nominations are announced on January 23rd. The music industry loves it.
Nominations for the 96th Academy Awards will be announced on Tuesday, January 23, and ABC will broadcast the ceremony live from the Dolby Theater on March 10.
