Rachel McAdams has admitted she was in talks to star in the new musical adaptation of Mean Girls, but it was too “difficult” to come to terms with creator Tina Fey.
“Tina and I experimented a little bit with some ideas, but in the end it was hard to get everything to work,” the Oscar-nominated star told Variety.
Adds: “I was really into anything she wanted to do. I think the direction it’s gone in is going to be amazing and I can’t wait to see it.”
It was initially reported that talks about reuniting the original cast for the film fell through due to financial constraints.
Some movie fans are confused by the marketing for the upcoming reboot, as the film is not billed as a “musical” despite being adapted from a Broadway show.
But Rachel gave a stunning performance in Mean Girls as reigning bully Regina George, which she played in 2004.
Tina Fey, who wrote the film’s screenplay, then helped turn it into a Broadway musical with tunes by her husband Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Neil Benjamin.
Now the show has been adapted into its own film – simply called “Mean Girls” on current billboards – with a script rewritten by Tina, which hits theaters next month.
In addition to writing the script, Tina also reprises her role as high school mathematics teacher Mrs. Norbury, which she originated in the 2004 film.
Meanwhile, Rachel also revealed the real reason she turned down the chance to star in the recent Mean Girls reunion commercial alongside her old co-stars.

The musical film “Mean Girls” stars Avantika, Bebe Wood, Jaquel Spivey, Christopher Briney, Angourie Rice, Renea Rapp, Tina Fey and Auli’i Cravalho

Oscar-nominated star Rachel rebooted the musical and skipped a reunion ad
Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Chabert teamed up for a Walmart ad last month to promote the major store chain’s Black Friday sales.
But Rachel, who gave a terrific performance as reigning bully Regina George in Mean Girls, was nowhere to be seen.
In a new interview with Variety, the 45-year-old revealed the thought that made her say no when she was offered the ad.
“I don’t know; to be completely honest, I don’t think I was that excited about doing a commercial,” The Notebook star said.
“A movie sounded great, but I’d never done commercials before and it just didn’t feel like my style,” added the “Doctor Strange” actress.
“Besides… I didn’t know everyone did. Of course, I would always love to be a part of a Mean Girls reunion and stick to my plastic, but yeah, I figured it out later,” Rachel told the trade magazine.
In the original 2004 film “Mean Girls”, “Plastic” was the nickname for Regina’s popular clique, who want to infiltrate Lindsay Lohan’s character.

In the original 2004 film “Mean Girls”, Lindsay’s character (second Friday from right) infiltrates a plot called the “Plastics”, which consists of (from left) the characters Lacey, Rachel and Amanda.
Rachel’s most recent films include Are You There God? “It’s Me, Margaret,” based on the book of the same name by Judy Blume.
Abby Ryder Fortson plays the title role, while Rachel plays her mother in a cast that also includes Kathy Bates and Benny Safdie.
The film is set in the early 1970s, when the book was first published. In April, it disappointed and failed at the box office, although it received positive critical reception.
This year, Rachel also played a heightened version of herself on the FXX sitcom Dave with rapper and comedian Lil Dicky.
