EXCLUSIVE: Benjamin Bratt, Peter Bratt and Alpita Patel of 5 Stick Films collaborated on filmmaker Giorgio Ghiotto’s short documentary Fabric wings as executive producers.
The 2023 Student Academy award-winning film tells the story of Vidal Merma, a Peruvian native journalist who risks his life every day to ensure a future in which his son Erik can enjoy the simple joy of drinking clean water. Fabric wings is about a father’s sacrifice, community resilience and the unwavering human spirit in the face of environmental injustice.
The short film explores how indigenous communities, linked to their ancestral lands for centuries, face a new threat from multinational mining companies that reflect a long history of exploitation.
The short documentary won the Gold Medal at the 2023 Student Academy Awards and was nominated for the Best Documentary Short category at the 96 Awardse Academy Awards.
Ghiotto is a graduate of NYU Film & Journalism from Italy. He and Eliza Mitnick produced the film.

As children of the crew that captured Alcatraz Island in 1969, the film is very personal to the Bratts as it focuses on the struggle of the Quechua people, part of their Peruvian indigenous heritage.
5 Stick Films, which produced the Peabody Award-winning and Emmy-nominated documentary, Doloresis dedicated to amplifying indigenous and marginalized voices and believes that an authentic, culturally specific voice is ultimately universal.
