“The day of use Gun smoke And Gold mine Our presentation is over. We have a voice and we use it,” said Julia O’Keefe, Osage Nation costume consultant for Apple Original Films. Flower Moon Killer.
During the panel discussion for the Martin Scorsese-directed film at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles, O’Keefe and costume designer Jacqueline West spoke about their commitment to portraying the Osage Nation in the most authentic way possible.
“After long discussions with Marty, I really felt that it had to be completely authentic,” West said, describing the extensive research she did to build the costumes for the film, down to the beadwork embroidery and the color. Pattern.
It started at her home in Deadwood, SD, where West said she has an extensive library of past Native American films she’s worked on. However, she said she had never worked with the Osage Nation before, which she called “unique” for a Plains tribe. That’s why she had to intensify her research.
She used the Carnegie Library in Deadwood and eventually came across home movies made by the Osage people in the 1920s – the time period in which the film is set. Given the price of this technology at the time, this was an astonishing revelation. According to West, this footage would have cost $1,800 per minute to shoot.
“Probably only the Osage and the royal family in England could afford to make home movies during that time,” she said. “But through this they documented their lives and their journeys. It was great.”
West said she also relies heavily on O’Keefe for her expertise as a member of the Osage Nation. The women consulted with many Osage artists and hired them to work on the film.
“If you really want authentic stories to be told, you have to engage with the artisans of any country, not just ours, but any country,” explained O’Keefe. “Because they are some of the best researchers and storytellers of the next artwork they produce.”
