The Golden Globes have found a new broadcast home. The upcoming 81st edition of the Hollywood Awards Show on January 7, 2024 will air live on CBS, stream on Paramount+ and be available on the CBS app. It’s an important time slot for the show, which follows an NFL doubleheader on CBS Sunday and is expected to be supported by a major marketing campaign.
The announcement follows a multi-month search that began after Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge acquired the Golden Globes’ assets, rights and properties from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in June, turning the awards show into a commercial entity and HFPA dissolved. .
The new broadcast partnership follows the Globes’ longstanding relationship with NBC and brings the Globes back to CBS, where the ceremony was broadcast in 1981 and 1982. With the Golden Globes and the Grammys, CBS presents two of the best awards shows on television.
“Live entertainment and sports have always been a hallmark of CBS, and this year’s Globes add an exciting new dimension to our first quarter schedule,” said George Cheeks, president and chief executive officer of CBS. “The January date also provides the added benefit of another signature platform to support the return of CBS’ new primetime programming in February.”
The ceremony, which includes film and television categories, will be broadcast live coast-to-coast. Pacific Time Zone stations broadcasting the event live will also air the entire Golden Globe Awards prime-time telecast immediately following the live telecast.
“We are so proud to bring the Golden Globes to CBS to celebrate 81 years of awards history,” said Jay Penske, CEO, chairman and founder of Deadline parent company Penske Media and owner of Dick Clark Productions. “CBS has demonstrated an impressive 30-year commitment to the Grammys and has contributed significantly to its long-term success. In CBS, we have found an ideal partner who understands the value of live entertainment programming and whose cross-platform distribution model reflects the way global audiences consume content today.”
Under a previous arrangement, CBS attempted to host the Globes in 2010, but the show remained on NBC, where it had aired since 1996. In 2018, NBCUniversal signed a new eight-year deal to continue broadcasting the Globes long-term through 2026. declined to air the show in 2022 after revelations about a lack of diversity and questionable business practices at the HFPA , and the ceremony was not televised that year. The channel returned as a broadcast partner for a show in 2023, which also streamed on Peacock. It was a one-year contract that was not renewed, prompting the search for a new broadcast partner.
The Globes’ network change follows the 2023 show and has the second-lowest ratings ever (6.3 million viewers). It also comes after two years of efforts by the Globes to diversify its voting body and implement a new code of conduct.
There are two new categories at the 2024 Globes: Cinema and Box Office Achievement and Best Television Stand-Up Comedian.
“At a time when audiences are consuming content on their own schedules, we are excited to bring the Golden Globes to viewers around the world through CBS’ robust platforms,” said Golden Globes President Helen Hoehne. “Audiences can enjoy our show live and on demand. We can’t wait to unveil the magic of our most unforgettable show yet.”
Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner of White Cherry Entertainment will serve as executive producers and showrunners for the 81st Golden Globe Awards, with Weiss also directing. The awards show, which will be shown in more than 185 countries around the world, is produced and owned by Dick Clark Productions.
