Schitt’s Creek star Emily Hampshire has apologized for dressing up as feuding exes Johnny Depp and Amber Heard for Halloween. She called the costume one of the “most thoughtless, insensitive and ignorant things” she’s ever done.
Hampshire, 42, and a friend dressed up as the former couple on Tuesday night, but the costume quickly angered many fans and the actress issued a statement on Wednesday apologizing for the costume destruction.
“I would like to comment on one of the most thoughtless, insensitive and ignorant things I have ever done. For Halloween I stupidly thought it would be fun to dress up like Johnny Depp and Amber Heard,” she posted on her Instagram.
“I am deeply sorry and ashamed that I brought something so terrible into the universe. Domestic violence is never funny,” she continued. “These are real problems with real people and I REALLY regret my actions. I will do better in the future. I am sorry.’
The original costume included several props referencing last year’s brutal libel trial, including a stack of plastic stuffed into Emily’s suit.

Emily appeared as Johnny, complete with a pulled-out moustache, tattoos and slicked-back hair, while her friend dressed as the ghostly Amber.
She held a bottle of wine and stuffed the “poop” into her suit jacket as she sat next to “Amber” who made several crying faces.
While the images – captioned “Happy Halloween” and two jack-o-lantern emojis – were eventually deleted from her account, the messages on the screen were slammed by outraged viewers who shared them on social media.
“It’s truly a special depravity to keep the costumes going even a year and a half later.” “@emilyhampshire clearly felt the need to take over,” one angry X user posted on the social media site alongside pictures of the costumes. .
Another disappointed X user reposted the images and expressed her disappointment.
“So disappointing to see this from @emilyhampshire. “Words cannot express how disappointed and disgusted I am,” they wrote.
The backlash continued on social media site Reddit.
‘Wow. It’s clearly tasteless, but the wine bottle holder? Disgusting,” one Reddit user wrote.
“Well, it’s incredibly disappointing. While not offensive, this costume is so late to the party,” wrote another.

In 2016, 36-year-old Amber accused Johnny of domestic violence and the actor lost a defamation case in the UK after he sued The Sun for calling him a “wife beater”.
Public attention was also drawn after Depp sued Heard over a 2018 Washington Post article about abuse, which his lawyers say is about Johnny.
The trial caused quite a stir at the time and the jury ruled largely in Johnny’s favor, although Amber won one of her three counterclaims.
In December 2022, Amber said in a statement on Instagram that she had made the “very difficult decision” to settle the case.
