Katie Holmes says in a candid interview that “sexual assault is a well-known secret among all women,” and also reveals her urge to “protect” her “amazing” daughter Suri, 16.

Katie Holmes gave a long interview to Glamor on Wednesday, in which she opened up about sexual assault, her love for her daughter Suri and not believing she’s sexy.

The 44-year-old Dawson’s Creek actress promoted her new film Rare Objects, which she directed, with the release while talking about her family and fame.

In the film, there is an early scene where the young protagonist Benita, played by Julia Mayorga, is attacked.

She said of capturing the sensitive moment: “What mattered most to me was what it did [Benita] thereafter. Unfortunately for me [sexual assault] is a well-known secret among women, so we don’t have to give too much away to know what we’re talking about.

“Julia was so amazing in that scene and it was really hard to shoot because I just needed her face.

“I kept saying to both actors, ‘These are your faces. And so they really had to go there. Everyone was pretty shaken afterwards.”

Rare Objects is based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Kathleen Tessaro.

Although the book is set shortly after the Great Depression, Holmes’ film takes place in modern New York City.

The film revolves around a young woman who tries to rebuild her life by working in an antique shop before various characters from her past reappear.

Katie looked stunning for the glossy cover, wearing a sheer black and white top with gold detailing and a nose ring.

Other looks saw her posing in a low-cut gold dress with a statement belt, before changing into a quirky white corset top and gray trousers.

Elsewhere during the interview, she offered a rare glimpse into family life with her 16-year-old daughter Suri – who she shares with ex-husband Tom Cruise.

She said it was very important to “protect” her because her only child was “so visible at a young age”.

Katie added that she is “grateful” to be her parents because she is such an “amazing person”.

Katie’s new film Rare Objects is released in both theaters and on demand on Friday.

In addition to directing the film, the actress co-wrote the screenplay, served as producer and played a supporting role.

Artists such as Julia Mayorga, Derek Luke and Gina Jun completed the film’s cast.

Deadline previously revealed that the project was in development as of June 2021.

The trailer for the upcoming film was then released to the public last February.

Holmes sat down for a recent interview with Access Hollywood and shared how moved she was by the relationship between the novel’s protagonist and primary supporting character.

“What I love about this film and what drew me to the book is the friendship between these two characters,” she said.

The artist went on to say that she wanted to portray their relationship in a positive light.

“We see how they both struggle with different things in their lives, but they also find the joy in life for each other and we see them support each other. I really like seeing that on screen and seeing women supporting each other,” she said.

Mayorga also explained that while working on set, she quickly bonded with the film’s director.

“I was really excited to work with Katie… there are so many talented people in this film,” she said.
