A popular BBC drama is not returning for a sixth season as its lead actress has confirmed there are no new episodes in the pipeline.
Anne Reid appeared on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday and dashed fans’ hopes that there would be another series of The Last Tango in Halifax.
The hit comedy-drama ran for four series from 2012 to 2016 before returning for a fifth series in 2020, much to the delight of fans.
During her appearance on GMB, Anne, 87, who stars as Celia Dawson on the show, was asked by host Ed Balls if Last Tango would return to Halifax.
However, Anne left fans disappointed when she said she didn’t think there would be another series, but hinted they could do a Christmas special.

She said: “It would be nice I know Derek is ready and I’m talking to Sarah, I don’t know about Nicola. She said: “I think a Christmas special would be nice”. We won’t do another series.’

Written by Happy Valley’s Sally Wainwright, Last Tango in Halifax is about former childhood friends Celia (Anne) and Alan Buttershaw (Derek Jacobi).
The couple reunite in their widows and 70s after their grandchildren bring them together on social media, leading them to rekindle their love and tie the knot.
The storyline also follows the lives of their respective daughters, Caroline (Sarah Lancashire) and Gillian (Nicola Walker).
The drama’s fourth season aired in 2016, but series five didn’t hit screens until 2020, when busy writer Sally penned the next installment in the series.
The highly anticipated fifth series follows Alan and Celia seven years after their marriage and saw them living together in a beautiful bungalow.
Sally has previously shared that Last Tango in Halifax is loosely based on the true story of her own mother’s later-life romance with a former colleague.

Happy Valley returned to screens after a long wait for its third and final series, culminating in episodes aired earlier this year.
The last episode ended the nine-year game of cat and mouse between Sergeant Cawood and Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton).
The dramatic 15-minute showdown between the two leads to villain Tommy finally giving up after three seasons on the run from his crimes.
Defeated, he faces his enemy Catherine and admits he “doesn’t hate her anymore”.
The criminal douses himself with gasoline and decides he would rather die than go back to prison. He pulls out his lighter to light himself.

While many fans expected high-octane action and perhaps even Catherine’s death, Sally’s decision to base her finale on a 15-minute sparring between Tommy and Catherine left viewers in awe.
Jan Moir of the Daily Mail called the episode “as moving and unexpected as it is thrilling and thought-provoking, with moments of suffocating emotion and touches of humor”.
Lucy Mangan, writing for The Guardian, praised “certain” creator and writer Wainwright for helping us find clean but honest solutions to every part of the story.
Carol Midgley of The Times agreed, saying, “Hats off to Wainwright for avoiding a spectacular shootout.” What was brilliant about it was its discreet, homely smallness.”
