My Big Fat Greek Wedding star Nia Vardalos has announced the official release date for the highly anticipated third installment in the popular franchise.

Not only does Vardalos – known as protagonist Fotoula “Toula” Portokalos – return as her iconic character, the 60-year-old is writing and directing the sequel.

She took to Instagram on Friday to confirm that the rom-com hits theaters on September 8.

‘It’s true!!! You are all invited to the big family reunion!! Thank you @focusfeatures @universalpictures!! Here we go! #mybigfatgreekwedding3!! The original group is back together,” Vardalos wrote.

She noted that it was produced by Oscar winner Tom Hanks, his musician wife Rita Wilson, and award-winning producer Gary Goetzman, with Hollywood heavyweights Steven Shareshian and Scott Niemeyer serving as executive producers.

And producer Paul Brooks, like the last two films, also financed the latest part.

She teased that “the original cast is back, with some surprise guests as well.”

Louis Mandylor, Elena Kampouris, Maria Vacratsis, Andrea Martin, Gia Carides, Joey Fatone and John Corbett – who plays Nia’s on-screen husband – star. the third movie.

Newcomers Elias Kacavas and Melina Kotselou have also joined the cast.

But one of the main characters is sadly missing as actor Michael Constantine, who played Toula’s father Costas “Gus” Portokalos, died of natural causes in August 2021 at the age of 94.

Vardalos continued in Friday’s post: “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to write and direct this third installment in our franchise. See you at the cinema! Worldwide. OMG’

While the story’s premise has been largely kept under wraps, it was previously reported that the film will refer to a family reunion that was shot entirely in Greece last summer.

Vardalos, who wrote all three screenplays in the franchise, helmed the project after Joel Zwick and Kirk Jones helmed the first and second films, respectively.

During filming last summer, Vardalos shared updates and photos taken on the sets in Greece on her Instagram page.

In a July 2, 2022 post, she revealed that the film “will be shot on the mainland, including Athens, and on several islands, which will be merged into one location in the film.”

My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002) was a huge surprise hit at the worldwide box office, earning $368.7 million on a budget of just $5 million.

Vardalos played Fotoula ‘Toula’ Portokalos, a young woman who is part of a large, loud and pushy Greek family who just wants her to get married and have children.

Toula shocks many in her family, including her fiery father (Constantine), when she begins dating and eventually marries Ian Miller (Corbett), a handsome white Anglo-Saxon Protestant.

Despite all the success and rave reviews, 14 years passed between the first film and the sequel, which finally came out in March 2016.

Many of the cast members returned for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 (2016), which ultimately fell short of the original’s success but still turned a healthy profit. $90.6 million worldwide on an $18 million budget.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 is slated to hit theaters on September 8, 2023.
