California mother Nyla Kraft has given birth to rare naturally conceived triplets weighing a combined total of nearly nine kilograms in the United States.
The 36-year-old mother delivered three boys whose combined birth weight reached about 8.6 kilograms, placing the delivery close to the world record of 10.3 kilograms for triplets, ABC7 reported.

Medical staff described the pregnancy as a very rare event because the triplets were conceived without medical assistance or fertility treatments. The set of brothers includes a pair of identical twins alongside a fraternal twin brother.
In human reproduction, identical twins form when a single fertilized egg splits into two embryos sharing identical genetic material. Fraternal twins occur when two separate eggs are fertilized by distinct sperm cells. While naturally occurring triplet births are uncommon, a spontaneous pregnancy that combines identical twins with a fraternal sibling is exceptionally rare in obstetrics.
Spontaneous triplet pregnancies occur naturally in roughly one out of every 10,000 births. The odds of conceiving triplets naturally without in vitro fertilization or ovulation-inducing medications are already low, and the presence of identical twins within a triplet set reduces those odds even further.
Rare medical occurrence
Kraft discovered she was carrying triplets during a routine medical examination after asking her doctor whether she might be expecting twins. Dr. Quin Vo-Hanser said that across three decades of medical practice she had never encountered a triplet pregnancy with these specific characteristics, noting that all three infants were also of the same sex.
The outcome matched a history of multiple births in Kraft's family, where previous instances of twins and triplets had all involved male children. Kraft's husband admitted he was in shock after learning the news, as the couple already had two children and saw their household expand from four members to seven.
Most triplet pregnancies result in significantly lower birth weights because physical space within the uterus is limited. Standard single newborns average around three kilograms, whereas individual triplets typically weigh under two kilograms at birth. Delivering three infants with a total weight of 8.6 kilograms means each boy averaged nearly three kilograms, a figure comparable to a full-term single birth.
High risk delivery
Kraft noted that she experienced continuous pain and discomfort throughout her pregnancy before undergoing an exceptionally difficult labor. A team of roughly 15 medical professionals assisted during the delivery, including three neonatologists, two pediatricians, and several other medical specialists.
Multiple pregnancies place heavy physical demands on an expecting mother, often increasing the likelihood of complications during labor and delivery. Hospitals standardly deploy multi-disciplinary teams for high-risk deliveries, with neonatologists focusing on immediate newborn stabilization and specialized pediatric care.
The family of seven is now adjusting to life at home following the rare birth. High-weight triplet deliveries remain extraordinary in global medical records, where total birth weights approaching nine kilograms are rarely documented.
