Hundreds of fans gathered on the streets of Mumbles in Wales as the body of singer Bonnie Tyler returned home on Saturday.
Crowds applauded and sang her signature hit Total Eclipse of the Heart as the hearse moved through the area. Tyler's coffin was draped in the Welsh flag and accompanied by her photograph, with onlookers throwing flowers at the vehicle before following the procession toward her home in silence.
The singer, born Gaynor Hopkins, died on July 8 at a hospital in Portugal at the age of 75. Her family and management team had previously stated that her absence from public view was due to treatment for an illness.
Mumbles is a coastal village situated along the western edge of Swansea Bay in South Wales. Tyler had been undergoing medical care in Faro, a city located in southern Portugal, prior to her death.
Funeral procession and public ceremony
Family members had invited well-wishers to gather along Newton Road on Saturday afternoon as the procession moved from the funeral home to the family residence. According to the Daily Mail, mourners began assembling well before the procession arrived, carrying floral tributes to honor the artist who rose from Wales to international stardom.
A public celebration of life service for Tyler will take place on Monday, August 17, at 12 p.m. local time at Swansea Minster, St Mary's Church. Swansea Minster is a landmark parish church located in Swansea city centre.
According to official details, church seating for the ceremony will prioritize family members and invited guests. The service will also be broadcast on large screens outside the venue and streamed live online for members of the public.
Following the church service, the funeral procession is expected to pass through Skewen at approximately 1:20 p.m. Skewen is the South Wales village where Tyler was born and raised. A private service reserved for her family will take place afterward.
Medical treatment in Portugal
Tyler was admitted to a hospital in Faro, Portugal, in May for emergency bowel surgery. Doctors placed the singer into an induced coma several days after the operation to assist her recovery, her family announced at the time.
She emerged from the coma in mid-June but remained in a serious condition within an intensive care unit. While her family reported initial signs of improvement, they noted that her recovery would require extended time. Official announcements confirmed on July 9 that she had passed away the previous evening.
Music career and international legacy
Known for her distinctive husky voice, Tyler forged a musical career that spanned nearly five decades. She earned global acclaim through a series of successful single releases during the late 1970s and 1980s.
Her notable recordings include It's a Heartache, Holding Out for a Hero, and Total Eclipse of the Heart. Released in 1983, Total Eclipse of the Heart became her biggest commercial triumph, topping music charts across both the United Kingdom and the United States.
In 2013, Tyler represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest performing Believe in Me. The Eurovision Song Contest is an annual international music competition staged among member broadcasters of the European Broadcasting Union.
