Blood sugar morning drinks recommended by dietitians

Dietitians have highlighted four morning drinks including water, yerba mate, lattes and protein shakes that help normalize blood sugar levels.

Blood sugar morning drinks recommended by dietitians

Four morning beverages can help normalize blood sugar levels and prevent sudden glucose spikes, according to dietitians consulted by health publication EatingWell. The first drink of the day delivers rapid carbohydrates and sugar, but often lacks essential stabilizing nutrients like protein and dietary fiber.

Nutrition experts identified plain water, yerba mate, high-protein lattes and protein shakes as effective options to stabilize glucose levels early in the day. Each option offers specific metabolic benefits while avoiding added sugars that cause blood sugar volatility.

Water remains the most reliable option for glucose management because it contains zero carbohydrates and no added sugars. The American Diabetes Association recommends water as the primary beverage for individuals diagnosed with diabetes or those facing a higher risk of developing the condition.

For those who dislike plain water, adding lemon or lime provides a flavor boost without adding sugar. Dietitian Sarah Gold Anzlovar said lemon water offers a simple way to secure hydration benefits while keeping liquid intake consistent throughout the morning.

Early research suggests that citrus acidity may slightly slow down the rate of starch breakdown and its entry into the bloodstream. Although these studies have been conducted on a small scale, experts note the effect may help smooth out post-meal glucose spikes.

Yerba mate tea and metabolic health

Yerba mate provides a caffeinated alternative with specific health benefits for glycemic control. Dietitian Gisela Bouvier said yerba mate is a South American tea with a unique, slightly bitter and earthy taste that contains a combination of caffeine, polyphenols and theobromine.

Bouvier noted that because yerba mate contains no added sugar, it does not trigger a rapid rise in blood sugar levels. Polyphenols are naturally occurring antioxidant compounds found in plants that help protect cells from oxidative stress.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials revealed that yerba mate consumption links to improvements in several glycemic metrics. The findings showed reductions in post-meal glucose levels and HbA1c among individuals with metabolic risk factors. HbA1c is a standard clinical measure reflecting average blood sugar levels over the preceding two to three months.

Yerba mate is traditionally produced from the dried leaves of the Ilex paraguariensis tree, a plant native to South America. It is widely consumed across Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and southern Brazil as a traditional herbal infusion.

Protein choices in morning coffee and shakes

Lattes can also fit into a blood-sugar-friendly morning routine depending on the type of milk selected. Regular cow's milk and unsweetened soy milk boost protein content, whereas most other plant-based milks lack significant amounts of protein.

Protein plays a crucial role in slowing down the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream after eating or drinking. Experts recommend choosing high-protein milk options and strictly limiting added sweeteners when preparing coffee drinks.

Protein shakes offer another practical option with long-lasting effects on glucose regulation. Recent research indicates that consuming protein at breakfast improves glucose responses after lunch and dinner later the same day.

Dietitian Karlyn Remedios stated that a healthy morning shake should combine protein, fiber and healthy fats. Remedios advised starting with a protein base such as a protein powder supplement, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese or soy milk.

To complete the shake, Remedios recommended adding berries as a high-fiber carbohydrate source. She suggested finishing the drink with healthy fat sources such as chia seeds, ground flaxseed or avocado to maintain sustained energy levels.
