Dark circles, bags under the eyes, drooping or drooping eyelids… There are many aspects that make our eyes look older. And it is that a drooping eyelid causes an appearance of fatigue and the expression ages. Hence the growing concern to remove and lift the upper lid to enhance the look.
“The eyelid ages and falls for two reasons: the first is because everything that is the eyebrow goes down and therefore also makes the eyelid drop. And the other is that there is slackening and excess skin and tissue between the eyebrow and The eyelashes are two completely different causes that are treated differently,” says Dr. Gema Pérez Sevilla, oral surgeon and expert in aesthetic medicine for the face.
What to do if drooping eyelids are the result of a lowering of the eyebrow?
When the cause of the excess eyelid is a drooping eyebrow (which in medicine is called eyebrow ptosis), this drooping is caused by slackening of the forehead, that is, the skin of the forehead stretches and the muscle loses tone, everything what is the anatomical complex of the eyebrow drops. In these cases we have different types of treatments. The most aggressive and corrective is a lift frontal (it opens in the scalp, loosens the skin from the forehead and removes that skin upwards, raising the eyebrows. It’s a treatment that isn’t used as much anymore).
“The most requested procedure in this case is the lift endoscopic, which consists of making small incisions in the scalp, through which a small camera is inserted, the skin is peeled off the forehead, without having to open it, and with some sutures in the muscle, the structures come up. It is surgical, but less aggressive,” assures the expert.
The third treatment is the tensor threads that the expert recommends only for the tail of the eyebrow, not for the central part. “Since the forehead is an area of high mobility, this treatment should be enhanced by applying Botox to the forehead to prevent the frontal muscle from exerting so much force that it negatively counteracts the effect of the pull wire. It is a treatment that is very fashionable and is suitable for cases that are not very pronounced or where the patient does not want to resort to other techniques, because if the fall of the eyebrow is very strong, the result will not last long. You can also raise the eyebrow with a little Botox, which lifts the eyelid,” says Dr. Gema Perez Sevilla.
How do you fix a drooping eyelid when there is excess tissue between the eyebrows and the eyelashes?
If the cause of the drooping eyelid is an excess in the structures (tissues) between the eyebrows and the eyelashes, it can have several causes:
- An excess of skin that is normally linked to an excess of muscle (it’s a hereditary thing).
- An excess of fat: The central fat next to the nose grows and pulls on the skin, causing the eyelid to droop.
- That the lacrimal gland has fallen (something common with age), because the ligaments have relaxed. This makes the eyelid look more droopy.
We have different treatments to solve these problems. “The least invasive treatment is to treat the eyelid with the CO2 laser that pulls back the skin tissue that evaporates the superficial layers of the skin and renews that skin to increase smoothness. The deeper layers contract, making the eyelid smaller. In this slightly aggressive treatment we only treat the skin, not the muscles or fat. Another simple treatment is to apply botulinum toxin to the crow’s feet to relax that muscle, raising the tail of the eyebrow slightly and lifting the eyelid,” says Dr. Gema Perez Sevilla.
Blepharoplasty: Another Option for Saggy Eyelids
When the matter is more complex and there is already a significant volume of fat, it is necessary to resort to blepharolaser or eyelid correction. dr. Gema Pérez Sevilla is committed to laser-assisted blepharoplasty or laser blepharoplasty because it has many more advantages than conventional blepharoplasty. It is less aggressive, because it is an outpatient procedure (in 2 or 3 hours the patient returns home), it has a better recovery, more safety and the result is much more natural.
