Just a few years ago, we could not imagine that eye color could change forever. And now there are methods that allow you to do this in a single visit to the doctor. The beauty industry is evolving rapidly and we are trying to keep up with it. So today we spoke to ophthalmologists to find out how safe and studied eye color change surgery is, what techniques are available, and whether it’s worth it.

What are the indications for surgery?
There is no medical indication for such a procedure; Both of our experts agree on this. The operation is completely aesthetic in nature. Moreover, it is quite insecure. “The method began to be used a very long time ago and there is no statistical data on the long-term results of the procedure. Therefore, it is too early to talk about complete security. In addition, this method of exposure to the eye with a laser itself carries many potential risks,” says professor Arseny Kozhukhov, ophthalmologist of the highest category, founder of the Spectr ophthalmology clinic.

“Today, there are various types of operations to change eye color: techniques using lasers (iris resurfacing, pigment crushing) and insertion of an artificial colored iris (essentially colored contact lens) into the eye,” says DocDeti ophthalmologist Svetlana Pervykh. and DocMed.

Now let’s take a closer look at each method. For this, we give the floor to Arseny Kozhukhov.
“The first surgery involves changing the color of brown eyes to a lighter color by removing the pigment in the outer layer of the iris. Eye color is determined by the amount of melanin – the more it is, the richer the color. So, during the operation, the doctor applies a low-power laser on the dark pigment, making it lighter. The intensity of the illumination will depend on the exposure time. At first, the iris becomes darker as the pigment cells die. And then gradually enlightenment occurs. After about a month, the iris takes its final color. This process is irreversible and it will be impossible to return the previous color.
The second method is to use iris implants. This option is used in cases of congenital eye abnormalities, as well as partial or complete loss of the iris due to injury or complications. It is a round prosthesis that is placed in place of your own iris and whose color can be changed. Artificial implants are used in cases that cause serious damage to the eye, but not as an aesthetic procedure.”
How is the rehabilitation process going?

According to Svetlana, in the case of laser type surgery, the rehabilitation period lasts from one to three months. In the case of implants – much longer. Often this is accompanied by active photophobia, tearfulness and the inability to be in a bright place.
What complications may occur?
Ophthalmologists categorically do not recommend such interventions. “Firstly, these operations are not included in any clinical recommendations, and the results of long-term examination of patients are not recorded, since they appeared not so long ago. Secondly, as explained earlier, they have many complications that medicine cannot currently cope with,” says Svetlana.
Among the main complications after surgery, Arseniy identifies the following.
– Photophobia, sensitivity to light and double vision. This occurs due to the destruction of the natural pigment, which can affect the pupil.
– Risk of developing glaucoma, increased intraocular pressure and gradual atrophy of the optic nerve. This occurs due to impaired fluid flow from the eye.
Cost of the procedure
Laser operations to change eye color are not performed in our country. The procedure is possible in the UK and the USA, where the trend comes from. Its cost abroad varies from tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Is it possible to change eye color without surgery?

An old and well-known way to change eye color is lenses. New generation lenses are significantly higher in quality and comfort. They also allow you to change the shade of your eyes, not only for those with light brown eyes, but also for those with dark brown eyes. The lenses hide the natural color but also look natural.
