A wild badger has been causing material damage and frightening residents during repeated nightly visits to gardens in a housing estate bordering woods in Grand-Champ, Morbihan. News outlet Franceinfo reported on Tuesday, August 4, that the wild animal has disrupted daily life in the neighborhood by damaging property and targeting domestic animals.
One resident washing his car outside his home described how the animal damaged his gate and severed the wire of his fence to gain entry. He said the badger charged at his dog, forcing them to rush back inside, and recalled seeing the creature's long claws with fear. He stated that although some people think residents are overreacting, anyone who encounters the animal face to face would not stay in front of it. He also expressed concern for local children running in the gardens who could cross paths with the wild mammal.
Attacks on poultry and debate over identity
Three houses down, resident Émilie regularly records video footage of the badger and showed clips to a visiting journalist. She recounted that her daughter was once chased by the badger early in the morning while riding an electric scooter. She also reported that her partner awoke around 3 a.m. one night to find the badger attacking their chickens, killing one bird and carrying it away.
A neighboring resident named Nicolas expressed doubts about whether the badger was to blame, suggesting that a pine marten might have been responsible instead. Émilie rejected the alternative theory and maintained her direct claims against the badger. She acknowledged that people tell her badgers typically feed on small rodents or earthworms, but insisted her partner saw the badger take the chicken with his own eyes.
Call for relocation and official advice
Disturbed by the nightly visits, local residents are demanding that authorities relocate the badger away from residential areas. Benoît-Raphaël Castelain, president of the local hunting society and an elected local official, called for calm and suggested the animal's behavior is linked to the recent heatwave. He explained that when natural food and water sources dry up on their territory, badgers move near houses, where pet owners frequently leave out bowls of water and kibble.
Municipal authorities reminded residents of legal rules prohibiting anyone from shooting or trapping badgers outside designated hunting seasons without an official decree from the prefecture. Castelain noted that teams involved in digging out badgers generally intervene only when agricultural crops suffer damage.
Town officials recommended that residents gather video and photographic evidence to prompt action from the prefecture, which stated that it is currently reviewing the matter. Castelain concluded that leaving the badger alone is the simplest approach, stating that when temperatures drop, the animal will return to its normal habits and move away from homes.
